The O’Brien family is reunited on the picturesque shores of Chesapeake, but it’s not as happy a reunion as it would seem at first glance. For all of the lakefront views and sparkles that shine down on this family, there are cracks in the foundation that become more and more apparent with every sideways glance and offhand remark. This family sure does have a lot of secrets - or as they like to call them ‘surprises’. By the end of “Home To Roost” Parts 1 & 2, each O’Brien reveals a ‘surprise’ that they are dealing with. If you've not yet watched the episode, you can catch up online here. Otherwise, here is a look at each of the O’Brien’s personal struggles so far:

Abby:
Abby has a litany of personal struggles, the top being that her marriage has fallen apart. When her ex-husband Wes comes to collect the kids, he serves her with custody and divorce papers which surely are not going to be easily negotiated. Next, she will need to sort out her feelings for her ex-fiance - just another thing to add to the ever-growing list of life choices she needs to make.

Jess:
Jess is actively working to ignore her estranged Mother and bossy Father. To help with this avoidance, she’s moved up the launch date of her already aggressive B&B opening - a dangerously risky undertaking given all the work that still needs to be done on the house. She is in serious debt, and lives in the attic of her B&B (with her mother) and has to climb a ladder to get to her bedroom, which also seems like a real struggle.

Trace:
Abby’s long lost ex-fiance is having money troubles. His country music money is tied up in Nashville, leaving him no option but to work for the O’Brien patriarch as a handyman. Trace also seems to be struggling with some sort of health issue - or at least someone in his life is. Whatever the ‘surprise’ is, it’s not a good one, because it caused him to smash his guitar. Could there another woman other than Abby in Trace’s life?

Kevin:
Kevin is home from serving in the military but only temporarily, and has been deployed again, much to the dismay of the rest of the family.

Mom:
Mom is struggling with Kevin leaving for the military. But also with her relationship with her daughters, who still harbour resentment for her having left the family for so long. She’s got some time to make up for and will need to give her daughters some space to figure out how to move forward.

Dad:
The most mysterious of all the O’Briens, Dad has recently announced that he has decided to take the summer off from work. This comes as a shock to the rest of the family, who are used to him working Abby-style for their entire lives - is him being around more something they even want? Perhaps he is just making up for lost time with the family, but it seems there could be more to this than he is letting on...

Grandma Nell:
Grandma has some ominous health test results coming down the pipe. Nell is not only struggling with her physical health but also with the health of her son’s relationships with his kids and family. She is working hard to repair some of the damage that has been done, but really, how far will her own platitude “You can’t change the past, but you can create a new future” go?

Connor:
Connor doesn’t even know what kind of law he wants to practice! Perhaps divorce law? Connor has decided to go back to Chicago to finish up his law studies and take the bar, thanks to some much-needed advice from his father.

Bree:
Bree has writer’s block and is struggling to write her next play. She’s back at the shore for inspiration and has decided to stay at her parent's cottage for the summer to try her hand at writing a book. There is no telling how this decision will go over with her husband, who is still in Chicago. It would seem that her marriage could be on shaky ground, so in the meantime, she will cry and type.Watch new episodes of Chesapeake Shores, Thursdays at 9pm E/P.
