News crews have descended on Nashville once again. After Maddie’s brush with the law last week, she’s found herself at the centre of a debate about race and the cops she’s nowhere near ready to tackle.

Inside Edition is camped out on the curb outside of her house and she’s become the internet’s latest politically-infused punching bag; a meme of an overzealous, privileged white girl talking out of turn about race. #WhiteGirlsMatterToo

Never mind that the origin of the memes is the fugitive Deacon is harbouring, Daphne's friend Liv. That girl is trouble. Just wait and see.

Amidst all the chaos, Bucky pays Maddie a visit to give her some well-meaning advice. He tells her about Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, who famously said she was “ashamed the President of the United States was from Texas.”

He correctly tells Maddie that Natalie and the Dixie Chicks took a serious commercial hit when she refused to apologize. Fair point, but he gets the moral of the story totally wrong. Looking back, it’s worth considering the whole quote: “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”

Natalie was anti-war and she stood by those beliefs. She was brave to go up against the country establishment and though the Dixie Chicks suffered on the charts, they won respect in plenty of other corners. Their next album even won the Grammy for Album of the Year.

If Maddie’s looking for country idols, she could do worse than Natalie Maines.

At any rate, Maddie refuses to buckle to the pressure to apologize to the police. In time, she finds her own way to apologize for what she feels genuinely remorseful about – namely, hurting Clay – but more on that in a bit.

First, let’s talk about Nashville’s newest resident: Alyssa Greene, a.k.a. Rachel Bilson, a.k.a. The O.C.’s legendary Summer Roberts (or Dr. Zoe Hart to all of you Hart of Dixie fans). Alyssa is a “radically honest” Ted Talking former Twitter employee Zach has imported from Silicon Valley to help Highway 65 “pivot” or, in non tech-speak, change.

Her first big idea is to get Highway 65’s music into ads.

Her introduction to the team goes sort of like this…

Who knows, though? She scores Will a big deal as the first openly gay face of Budweiser, and you’re going to sell out, that’s a pretty good way to cash in.

She may find quite the challenge finding a brand partner for Highway 65’s newest signee, though. The label officially picks up Juliette’s “angel” Hallie, the gospel choir singer who rescued her from her plane crash.

After Juliette pushes Hallie onstage at the Bluebird in front of half the record labels in town, Deacon swoops in and offers her a deal. There’s just one catch: they want her, not the full band she plays with, which means ditching her still-married boyfriend George.

Hallie considers turning the deal down, but Juliette gives her a swift talking to.

Juliette may be harsh, but she’s good. She may just have a second career as a manager. And when Hallie finally agrees to record with the musicians Avery calls in, she feels the magic. A star is born.

Juliette’s other pet project, though, is a ticking time bomb. Maddie swings by the studio just as Juliette is recording the song she snagged from Maddie without her knowing it.

Expect that to blow up in Juliette's face real soon.

Now, back to Maddie’s situation at hand. She decides to go live on Facebook and speaks earnestly from the heart. She apologizes for her role in the whole mess, but stops short of saying the cops were in the right. Most important of all, she apologizes directly to Clay.

Across town, Clay’s watching, but he’s also packing his things. It’s too early to say why, but he hops into his car, points the wheels out of town and takes off. And, just like that, both Maddie and Nashville are in his rearview.
