A charismatic action star is hard to find. They're either one dimensional or over the top. Enter Bruce Willis. The versatile actor whose career spans 3 decades has over 100 credits to his name. In almost all of them there isn't a butt Bruce doesn't kick. At 62 years old, he's still one of the most bankable action stars in Hollywood, often known for playing strong and wisecracking characters. Here are 5 of our favourite films.
In this classic, Bruce plays John Mclane, an NYPD officer who takes down a bunch of terrorists inside the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles. It's an adrenaline-fueled romp with plenty of action, humour and well-timed plot twists which makes it one of the best in its genre. Yippee-ki-yay, mother****ers!
You can take the agent out of the CIA, but you can't take the CIA out of the agent. In this film (and its sequal, Red 2) Bruce plays Frank Moses, a retired agent who just wants to enjoy his pension. When his peaceful life is threatened by high-tech assassins, Frank rounds up a troop of other retired agents and together they tear it up! Red & Red 2 both feature epic action scenes from gunfire battles with A MISSLE LAUNCHER (whaaaat?!) to hand-to-hand combat that the actors did themselves, sans stunt double. Name me one other good movie that includes a group of seniours kicking tremendous ass.
I'll be honest, this one was confusing AF upon the first viewing. Bruce Willis plays the older version of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character, Joe, who's a "looper" a.k.a. hitman. Except he only assassinates people sent back from the future. Despite the mind-boggling storyline, it's a nice change of pace to see Bruce take on a more villainous role. The stand-off at the farm between Young Joe and Old Joe is intense to say the least. A great performance from Bruce!
The Fifth Element
This campy film is kind of like Die Hard but in space. Bruce plays Korben Dallas, an ex-special forces major turned taxi driver in 23rd Century New York City. It's up to him and that tight red tank top of his to save Earth from crashing into a giant rock. Spoiler alert: He did good! Fifth Element is sisually inventive and gleefully over the top but in the best way possible. Relive the magic on blu-ray if possible.
If we're ever hit with a plague I'm calling Bruce Willis pronto. In this half action half sci-fi film he plays James, an ex con who is forced to go back in time to prevent a deadly virus from killing 5 billion people. Bruce absolutely crushes this role which steers clear of any action hero cliches.
